The Aberdeen trawler Ben Barvas (A 175) went aground on the Little Skerry on 3 January 1964. The rescue took six hours to complete in very heavy seas with heavy surf breaking on the skerries. All but five of the crew were rescued by breeches-buoy, as the lifeboat could't get alongside the trawler. Another five men were removed earlier by another trawler Ben Screel.
The Silver Second-Service Clasp awarded to Coxswain Dan Kirkpatrick for the rescue of nine of the crew of the 'Ben Barvas'.
The Ben Barvas was a diesel driven trawler built in 1957 of 235 tons gross and 125 feet in length with a speed of about 9 1/4 knots.
