On 11 June 1917 the Norwegian steamer, ss Breid, on a voyage in convoy from Fredrikshald to West Hartlepool with a cargo of pit props, was sunk by the German submarine UC-41 (Kurt Bernis), ten miles ExS of Noss Head. There were no casualties and the crew were picked up by a British destroyer.
The Breid was built by Nylands Verksted, Christiania in 1897 and owned at the time of her loss by A/S Borgestad (Gunnar Knudsen), Porsgrunn. She was 1062 gross registered tons, her dimensions were 69.8m x 10.7m x 4.42m and she had a triple expansion engine which delivered 101 net horse power.
