Late on Tuesday night, Wick lifeboat under Coxswain Alexander McKay and his crew, went to the aid of the large steam trawler, 'George Smith' of North Shields, which having been disabled when her fishing net became wrapped round her propellor, ran aground on the Bar at the mouth of the river. In the pitch dark, with very heavy seas, the lifeboatmen rescued the crew of seven including Captain Taylor and landed them at Baikies harbour.
The following men formed the crew of the Wick lifeboat; Alexander macKay, (Coxswain), Alexander Gunn, Alexander Innes, John Bain, James McArthur, Donald Farmer, Thomas Farmer, William Forbes, James Phimster, James Thomson, Alexander Anderson, David Brown, William Shearer and Alexander Anderson, Sen.
The George Smith was built of wood in 1886 and was 14 tons.
