This New York registered steamer bound from Newport, Monmouthshire to Gothenberg, Sweden with a load of 3500 tons of coal and under the command of Captain Johansen, ran aground at Falligoe on the west side of Stroma during dense fog. The crew were rescued at great risk by Stroma fishermen and the vessel immediately became submerged from the bow to the forecastle. She lay like this for a number of days until the Aberdeen Salvage Company tug, Ocean Pride arrived and began unloading the Grayson’s cargo with a view to lightening the ship. Their attempts however were in vain and the Grayson became a total wreck. The steamer was owned by the Ocean Freight Line Inc., Wilmington, Delaware and was insured at Lloyds.
The Grayson was built in 1911 by the Great Lakes Engineering Works, Glew, Michigan. She was 75m long, 13m wide and was 2551 (or possibly 2607) gross registered tons. She had a triple expansion engine.
