This Leith registered barque was on a voyage from Quebec to Leith with a cargo of spars, when she was driven westward by a storm. Her sails spent and her rigging useless, the Larne was forced into a geo between Ham and Brough shortly after darkness fell. The local people flocked to the cliff edge, but the wind and the sea defeated their attempts to lower lines to the wreck until finally, by tying smouldering peats to the rope ends, contact with the crew was established and seventeen men were saved.
The Larne was commanded by Captain Shewan.
Built in 1840, she was 554 net registered tons and had a length of 38m and a beam of 8m.
