During thick fog at 10am on the morning of Sunday 29 May, this Liverpool registered iron steamship (built in 1868 and of 109 gross registered tons), whilst bound from Montrose to Liverpool under the Command of Captain Taylor, became stranded at the Ness of Duncansby. The crew were in no immediate danger and all reached the safety of the shore in their boats without difficulty.
At Duncansby the following Saturday, Wick auctioneer Mr Sinclair, sold some thirty tons of potatoes that had been saved from the wreck. The lots were put up in bolls which sold from 2s 9d to 11s 6d per boll. Also on the Saturday divers examined the vessel but were unable to give a definite opinion as to her condition and it was thought she was holed below her engines.
On Tuesday 14 June the wrecked steamer with engine, boiler, donkey boiler and steam winch along with a quantity of cabin furniture and other furnishings were also sold by public auction at Duncansby. The sale lasted several hours and the bidding was described as being “keen and spirited realizing prices considerably in excess of that expected” and Mr Gunn, Thurso who acted as auctioneer “kept his company well in hand and gave entire satisfaction to all concerned”.
The Pera and her cargo of potatoes and lath wood were insured and the vessel became a total wreck.
